Wichita State University's Innovation Campus - Wichita, KS

Former Golf Course Transformed Into World Class Innovative Campus

Challenge

Our team was faced with master planning an expansive campus on a former golf course site, to house innovative spaces for engagement between the Wichita State community and students. Maximizing the opportunities for public/private partnerships was critical to help provide a superior student experience.

Success

Starting in 2012, in collaboration with an architect and WSU staff, our multi-disciplined team was on the ground floor of this ambitious project: the transformation of approximately 120 acres of a former golf course into a public-private partnership of learning spaces, laboratories, living space and mixed-use developments. Our team created the master plan and then delivered detailed design for infrastructure including streets, a pedestrian mall, sanitary sewer, water distribution, and more than 22 buildings – including apartments, hotels, retail, restaurants and 2.6 million square feet of office space. The MKEC team has played a major role in nearly all of them, displaying our wide array of services to get these projects completed. We’ve tapped on team members from almost every discipline including survey, landscape architecture, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering. This engineering success has resulted in a campus that has become a catalyst for research, innovation and learning as it improves the quality of student life and draws the community onto the campus.

The Innovation Campus is the largest expansion ever at WSU and our team has been involved every step of the way.
