Canute Road over I-40 Bridge Rehabilitation — Canute, OK

Bridge Rehabilitation Provides Safety and Artistic Improvements

Engineering Challenge

When this bridge needed a total rehabilitation, we had to prepare final plans and specifications for this transformation to meet a tight deadline. Meanwhile, a key challenge was making sure one lane remained open 24/7 to allow for traffic during construction.

Engineering Success

The clock was running on this $1.46M project to transform the Canute Road Bridge over I-40 into a safer, aesthetically pleasing span – and we delivered in just 90 days. Drawing on resources across our team, we prepared final plans and specifications for deck replacement and substructure repair of the existing two-span continuous plate girder bridge. To satisfy ODOT’s requirement that one lane of traffic always remained open on the bridge, a construction sequencing plan was developed using temporary traffic signals and steel portable barriers. The traffic control plans involved using the interchange’s on and off ramps at night. The existing 28-foot clear roadway and four girder lines presented some construction complications, so the design increased the new deck’s clear roadway by two feet, and the new parapet now meets current safety standards. We introduced aesthetic enhancements as well as, replacing, staining, or covering with protective coating every square inch of the bridge. Now, thanks to unique artistic touches such as galloping horses carved into the concrete and a decorative medallion from the Oklahoma state flag, the improved Canute Road Bridge provides visual interest that sets it apart from neighboring bridges.

We completed final plans for a safer, aesthetically pleasing bridge in just 90 days.
